إِذاwhen قَلَّdwindles مالُthe wealth of المَرءِa man قَلَّgrow few صَديقُهُhis friends
وَضاقَتand narrows بِهِfor him عَمّاfrom what يُريدُhe desires طَريقُهُhis path
When a man's wealth dwindles, his friends grow few.
When a man's wealth dwindles, his friends decrease,
And his path narrows, keeping him from what he desires.
His path narrows for what he desires,
وَقَصَّرَand draws back طَرفُthe gaze العَينِof the eye عَنهُfrom him كَلالَةًout of weariness
وَأَسرَعَand hastens فيماin what لاnot يُحِبُّhe likes شَقيقُهُhis full brother
And the eye's gaze draws back from him in weariness.
The eye turns away from him out of weariness,
And his own brother hastens to do what he dislikes.
His companion rushes him into what he hates,
وَذَمَّand disparages إِلَيهِto him خِدنُهُhis close friend طَعمَthe taste of عودِهِhis wood
وَقَدand indeed كانَhe used to يَستَحليهِhe finds it sweet حينَwhen يَذوقُهُhe tastes it
And his close friend disparages the taste of his wood to him,
His joking turns bitter in his mouth,
Though he used to find it sweet when he tasted it.
Yet he used to relish it when he tasted it.
