    وَلَيسَ المُنى لِلمَرءِ كَيفَ يُريدُ

    We desire to endure, while calamities conspire;

    a person's wishes do not unfold as he desires.

    And who can trust the days? As for their ease,

    it is madness; and as for their hardship, it is severe.

    And which child of the days does not possess

    knowledge from time, both newly acquired and inherited?

    أَلا إِنَّ نَقصَ الشَيءِ حينَ يَزيدُ

    He sees what increases, yet the increase is his decline;

    behold, a thing's decline comes when it increases.

    And among the world's wonders is your certainty of perishing,

    and yet you desire to endure within it.

    Have you not seen that crops and offspring, all of them,

    perish—some standing, some reaped?

    وَأَنتَ كَما بادَ القُرونُ تَبيدُ

    By my life, many generations have indeed perished;

    and you will perish as those generations perished.

    And how many have come to lie beneath the earth, extinguished within it,

    though once they built above it and raised buildings.

    And how many multitudes has time erased from memory!

    Such is time: no multitude survives it.

    وَلِلدَهرِ وَعدٌ مَرَّةً وَوَعيدُ

    And death has causes that reveal themselves and hide;

    and time offers promise at one turn, and threat at another.

    وَإِنَّ الَّذي يُبلي الجَديدَ جَديدُ

    And by the Lord of decay, the new is surely bound for decay;

    and indeed, what wears out the new is itself new.
