To God belongs the outcome of all affairs.

I fear that parting will come swiftly.

Do you then trust this world, as though you do not see

on every side someone felled by calamities?

You have become blind though you see, bewildered,

in dazzling light, deaf though you hear.

You cast aside the remembrance of death,

so that you seem not to see how swift it is.

Why do I see what you have lost as though

you deliberately squandered it so it would be lost?

And hopes have adorned themselves for those who glimpse their promise,

and concealed deadly poison beneath themselves.

And the steeds of the devout have raced ahead toward a goal,

and there found rain-fed spring pasture.

And you will surely be tempted away from guidance unless you are

free of the world's reins as you turn toward it.

How many lessons you have seen for yourself—if you have taken heed

of them—and how many wondrous marvels you have seen!

If you seek safety in your affairs,

then be attentive and obedient to your Lord.
