The days have cried out that your departure is near.

Do you not hear, or are you feigning deafness?

Those you saw have passed on ahead of you, and you stand before

those who remain, until they catch up with you.

Why do I see you as though your eye could not see

lessons passing by as though they were arrows?

Calamities come while you are alert to them,

but once they pass, they seem like dreams.

    فَاِحذَر فَما لَكَ بَعدَهُنَّ مُقامُ

    The caprices of youth have already bid you farewell;

so beware: after them, no lasting stay is yours.

Gray hair has appeared as youth's successor,

and both are an adornment and a necklace for you.

And both are strong proofs against you,

and both are great blessings upon you.

A warm welcome to well-mannered gray hair,

and greetings and peace upon youth.

And indeed you lived in the bliss of youth,

and Islam has indeed clothed you in its dignity.

God bless those times whose men I knew

in adversity; they were truly generous.

Days when the gifts of hands were abundant,

when one owed protection never lost that protection.

So, as a lesson, you have been spared until the age in which

    widows and orphans have perished.

An age whose people's earnings are tainted

with corruption whose roots bear sins as branches.

An age whose nobles have shunned noble deeds,

    until noble deeds seem forbidden.

An age whose banners have fallen and been torn

to pieces, so its people have no banners.

And I have indeed seen those who ate what they desired,

while they themselves are food for the layers of earth.

The world's finery and its people's glitter

are all mere delusion and crumbling debris.

And many peoples have gone their way,

and you will surely go as those peoples went.

And many a man with beds made ready for him

has come to lie beneath a heap of earth.

And I have marveled: the causes of death are many,

yet people sleep, heedless of the causes of death.

The way of error is crowded despite its ruggedness,

while right guidance is smooth, with no crowd upon it.

And death is at work while eyes rest content,

amusing themselves, playing with wishes, and sleeping.

And God decrees affairs with His knowledge,

while a person is now praised, now blamed.

And creatures precede one another; leading

those behind them toward decay are those in front.

Each revolves around survival, full of hope,

while the days turn him toward death.

And He whose sovereignty endures is a Lord who has always been

a King whom imaginings fall short of reaching.

And people invent, according to their whims,

innovations; indeed, by them they have sat and stood.

And doubtful matters are chosen by whoever is not restrained

from them by acceptance or submission.

And Muhammad, if you follow his path, is for you

in every good a leader and a guide.

There is nothing that has been or is to be

but the pens have already dried concerning it.

So praise be to God, who endures

    forever; nothing besides Him endures.

And praise be to God, before whose majesty

and forbearance all minds grow small.

And praise be to God, whose knowledge has never

    been encompassed by imaginings.

    وَلِوَجهِهِ الإِجلالُ وَالإِكرامُ

    Glory be to Him, a King exalted in majesty;

and to His countenance belong reverence and honor.
