Take heed: true brothers are known only in times of trial.

And there is no good in the affection of an insincere friend.

By your life, nothing in all of life

Is more soothing to my eye than a congenial friend.

And every friend whose affection is not for God's sake—

Then I place no trust in him where his affection is concerned.

I love my brother for God's sake as long as his faith is sound,

And I spread before him whatever qualities of character he desires.

And I shun whatever involves humiliation and suspicion.

And I know that God, as long as I live, is my provider.

My chosen friend among brothers is any congenial companion,

Patient in bearing whatever befalls in times of trial.
