قُلsay لِمَنto the one whom لَستُI do not أُسَمّيname
قُل لِمَن لَستُ أُسَمّي
بِأَبيwith my father as ransom أَنتِyou (feminine) وَأُمّيand my mother
بِأَبي أَنتِ وَأُمّي
Say to the one I do not name:
Tell whoever asks my name
May my father and mother be your ransom!
By my father, you are my mother
بِأَبيwith my father as ransom أَنتِyou (feminine) لَقَدindeed أَصbeginning of 'you have become'
بِأَبي أَنتِ لَقَد أَص
بَحتِcompletion of 'you have become' مِنamong أَكبَرِthe greatest of هَمّيmy cares
بَحتِ مِن أَكبَرِ هَمّي
May my father be your ransom! Indeed, you have be-
By my father, you have become
come one of my greatest cares.
My greatest concern
وَلَقَدand indeed قُلتُI said لِأَهليto my family
وَلَقَد قُلتُ لِأَهلي
إِذwhen أَذابَmelted الحُبُّlove لَحميmy flesh
إِذ أَذابَ الحُبُّ لَحمي
And indeed I said to my family,
And I told my family
when love melted my flesh,
When love melted my flesh
وَأَرادواand they wanted ليfor me طَبيباًa physician
وَأَرادوا لي طَبيباً
فَاكتَفَواso they were content مِنّيfrom me بِعِلميwith my knowledge
فَاكتَفَوا مِنّي بِعِلمي
and they wanted a physician for me,
And they wanted a doctor for me
so they were content with my own knowledge:
They were satisfied with my knowledge
مَنwhoever يَكٌis يَجهَلُdoes not know ماwhat أَلbeginning of 'I suffer'
مَن يَكٌ يَجهَلُ ما أَل
قىcompletion of 'I suffer' فَإِنَّthen indeed الحُبَّlove سُقميmy sickness
قى فَإِنَّ الحُبَّ سُقمي
If anyone does not know what I suf-
Whoever does not know what I suffer
fer, love is my sickness.
For love is truly my illness
إِنَّindeed روحيmy soul لَبِبَغداsurely in Baghdad (name incomplete)
إِنَّ روحي لَبِبَغدا
دَcompletion of 'Baghdad' وَفيand in الكوفَةِKufa جِسميmy body
دَ وَفي الكوفَةِ جِسمي
Indeed, my soul is in Bagh-
My soul is in Baghdad
dad, and my body is in Kufa.
While my body is in Kufa
