Pitiable is he whom this world has beguiled with his hopes.
Wretched is he whom the life of this world has deceived with its hopes!
How often the world has toyed with his like.
How many the like of him has the life of this world toyed with!

The one intent on this world forgets his death,
The heedless man forgets the inevitability of his death
Through his long comings and goings within it.
in the length of his coming and going in it.

And time's vicissitudes never cease to beguile him,
The turns of fate do not cease to confuse him,
Until they snare him by the edge of his robe.
until it seizes him on the edge of his shovel.

Neither nights nor days allow
Neither nights nor days leave
Anything in this world to endure unchanged.
anything lasting in this life as it was.

Woe to the deluded ignorant man—how he refused
How miserable for the deluded ignorant man who refused
To bring death to mind while in this world.
to reflect on death in the life of this world!

What saves a man is what good he forwarded in this life

of his benevolence and favors in it.
ياO مَنyou who يَموتُwill die غَداًtomorrow ماذاwhat اِعتَدَدتَyou have prepared لِكَرfor anguish (word continues)

بِcompletes 'anguish' المَوتِdeath عِندَamid غَواشيهِits overwhelming agonies وَأَهوالِهand its terrors
O you who will die tomorrow, what have you prepared for the anguish
O you who dies tomorrow, what preparations have you made
Of death, amid its overwhelming agonies and terrors?
for the approach of death with its horrors?
يَموتُdies ذوa man of البِرِّrighteousness وَالتَقوىand piety فَتَغبِطُهُso you envy him without ill will
وَلاyet not تُنافِسُهُvie with him فيin بَعضِsome of أَعمالِهhis deeds
A man of righteousness and piety dies, and you envy his lot,
The righteous and pious man dies and is envied,
Yet you do not strive to match him in even a few of his deeds.
and none can compete with him in some of his deeds.
اِستَغنِhave no need بِاللَهِthrough God عَمَّنof anyone whom كُنتَyou used to تَسأَلُهُask him

Through God, have no need of anyone you used to petition;
Seek independence with God from those you used to ask.
For God is the best one to petition.
For God is the best one asked to fulfill requests.
