ماwhat قَدhas نَهىforbidden اللَهُGod وَلاand does not يَعمَلُact
O you who read in your books
O you who reads in his books
what God has forbidden, yet do not act accordingly.
What Allah has forbidden, yet does not act
قَدhas بَيَّنَmade clear الرَحمَنُthe Most Merciful مَقتَloathing الَّذيthe one who

يَأمُرُcommands بِالحَقِّwhat is right وَلاand does not يَفعَلُdo
The Most Merciful has made clear His loathing for one
The Most Merciful has made clear the hatred of one
who commands what is right but does not do it.
Who enjoins right but does not do it
مَنwhoever كانَis لاnot يُشبِهُresemble أَفعالُهُhis deeds
أَقوالَهُhis words فَصَمتُهُthen his silence أَجمَلُmore becoming
Whoever's deeds do not match
Whose actions do not resemble his words—
his words—his silence is more becoming.
His silence is more beautiful

قَدhas قارَفَتcommitted مِنof ذَنبِهاits sin أَعذَلُmore deserving of reproach
If anyone reproaches others, my own soul, for what
I blame my own soul for the sins
sins it has committed, deserves greater reproach.
It has committed
إِنَّindeed الَّذيthe one who يَنهىforbids وَيَأتيand does الَّذيwhat

Indeed, one who forbids, yet does what
Indeed, the one who forbids yet does
he forbade, does not act justly, in truth.
What he forbade is not just
وَالراكِبُand one who rides into الذَنبِsin عَلىin جَهلِهِhis ignorance

أَعذَرُmore excusable مِمَّنthan one who كانَis لايَجهَلُis not ignorant
And one who rides into sin in his ignorance
The ignorant sinner
is more excusable than one who is not ignorant.
Is more excusable than one who knows

Never mix what God accepts of
Do not confuse what Allah accepts
deeds with speech from you that He does not accept.
Of deeds with words He won't accept from you
