ياO خاطِبَwooer of الدُنياthe world إِلىto نَفسِهاherself
يا خاطِبَ الدُنيا إِلى نَفسِها
تَنَحَّwithdraw عَنfrom خِطبَتِهاcourting her تَسلَمِyou will be safe
تَنَحَّ عَن خِطبَتِها تَسلَمِ
O you who ask the world herself for her hand,
O suitor of this world for yourself,
Withdraw from courting her, and you will be safe.
Withdraw from asking for her hand, and you will be safe.
إِنَّindeed الَّتيthe one whom تَخطُبُyou woo غَرّارَةٌa habitual deceiver
إِنَّ الَّتي تَخطُبُ غَرّارَةٌ
قَريبَةُclose العُرسِthe wedding مِنَto المَأتَمِthe funeral gathering
قَريبَةُ العُرسِ مِنَ المَأتَمِ
Indeed, the one you woo is a deceiver;
She whom you court is a deceiver,
Her wedding is close to a funeral.
Her wedding chamber is near to the funeral home.
