لَسَكَنتُ ظِلَّ جَناحَ مَن يَتَخَلَّقُ
O you who affect good manners, if such manners would endure,
The noble who practice benevolence - if their benevolence were lasting -
I would dwell in the shade of the wing of one who affects them.
I would dwell in the shade of the wing of the benevolent one.

People are all alike in their miserliness;
People are all the same in withholding -
So to which of them, if they are examined, should I cling?
So with whom of them, if brought together, would I associate?

This is an age whose people have grown accustomed to
This is an era whose people are accustomed
The haughtiness of kings and the behavior of one who begs for alms.
To the wandering of kings and the deeds of the pretentious.
