أَياO عَجَبَwonder الدُنياthe world لِعَينٍto an eye تَعَجَّبَتthat marveled
وَياand O زَهرَةَbloom الأَيّامِof the days كَيفَhow تَقَلَّبَتit has changed
O wonder of the world to a wondering eye!
And O bloom of the days—how it has changed!
تُقَلِّبُنيturn me about الأَيّامُthe days عَوداًagain وَبَدأَةًand anew
تَصَعَّدَتِrose الأَيّامُthe days ليfor me وَتَصَوَّبَتand descended
The days turn me about, again and anew;
For me, the days have risen and fallen.
وَعاتَبتُand I reproached أَيّاميmy days عَلىfor ماhow تَروعُنيthey terrify me
فَلَمbut did not أَرَI see أَيّاميmy days مِنَfrom الرَوعِterror أَعتَبَتgrant relief
And I reproached my days for how they terrify me;
But I have not seen my days grant me relief from terror.
I shall announce the death of إِلىto الناسِthe people الشَبابَyouth الَّذيthat مَضىhas passed
تَخَرَّمَتِcut short الدُنياthe world الشَبابَyouth وَشَيَّبَتand made gray-haired
I shall announce to the people the death of youth now gone;
The world has cut youth short and turned me gray.
وَليand I have غايَةٌan end يَجريruns إِلَيهاtoward it تَنَفُّسيmy breathing
إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle انقَضَتis spent تَنفيسَةٌa breath ليof mine تَقَرَّبَتit draws nearer
And I have an end toward which my breathing runs;
Whenever a breath of mine is spent, that end draws nearer.
وَتُضرَبُand are set forth ليfor me الأَمثالُexamples فيin كُلِّevery نَظرَةٍglance
وَقَدand indeed حَنَّكَتنيhave seasoned me الحادِثاتُmisfortunes وَجَرَّبَتand tested
And in every glance, examples are set before me;
And misfortunes have seasoned me and put me to the test.
تَطَرَّبُyearns نَفسيmy soul نَحوَtoward دُنياa world دَنِيَّةٍbase
إِلىtoward أَيِّwhat دارٍabode وَيحَalas for نَفسيmy soul تَطَرَّبَتhas yearned
My soul yearns for a base world;
For what abode—alas for my soul!—has it yearned?
وَأُحضِرَتِand were made to harbor الشُحَّgreed النُفوسُsouls فَكُلُّهاso each of them
إِذاwhen هِيَit هَمَّتintends بِالسَماحِto give generously تَجَنَّبَتdraws back
And souls have been made to harbor greed, so each of them,
when it intends to give generously, draws back.
لَقَدindeed غَرَّتِhas deceived الدُنياthe world قُروناًgenerations كَثيرَةًmany
وَأَتعَبَتِand has wearied الدُنياthe world قُروناًgenerations وَأَنصَبَتand exhausted
Indeed, the world has deceived many generations;
And the world has wearied generations and worn them out.
هِيَit الدارُthe abode حاديthe camel-driver of المَوتِdeath يَحدوleads onward with song بِأَهلِهاits people
إِذاwhen شَرَّقَتrises in the east شَمسُthe sun of النَهارِday وَغَرَّبَتand sets in the west
It is the abode where death's camel-driver leads its people onward,
as the day's sun rises in the east and sets in the west.
بُليتُI have been afflicted مِنَby الدُنياthe world بِغولٍwith a ghoul تَلَوَّنَتchanged its colors
لَهاit has فِتَنٌtemptations قَدindeed فَضَّضَتهاhave silvered it وَذَهَّبَتand gilded it
I have been afflicted by the world with a ghoul that changes its colors;
It has temptations that have silvered and gilded it.
وَماand how أَعجَبَastonishing الآجالَallotted lifespans فيin خُدَعاتِهاtheir deceptions
وَماand how أَعجَبَastonishing الأَرزاقَmeans of sustenance كَيفَhow تَسَبَّبَتthey came about
And how astonishing are lifespans in their deceptions!
And how astonishing are the means of sustenance—how they come about!
رَأَيتُI have seen بَغيضَthe one hated by الناسِpeople مَنone who لاdoes not يُحِبُّهُمlove them
يَفوزُwins بِحُبِّthe love of الناسِpeople نَفسٌa soul تَحَبَّبَتendeared itself
I have seen that the one people hate is the one who does not love them;
A soul that endears itself wins people's love.
