غَيرَ أَنّي أَذُمُّ أَهلَ زَماني
O my two friends, I do not blame my age;
My friend, I do not resent time
but I blame the people of my age.
Except that I resent the people of my time

I cannot count how many brothers I had among
I do not count how many a brother I had
them, scant in loyalty, sweet of tongue.
Who were unfaithful though sweet of tongue

تُ بِحَظّي مِنهُ عَلى الشَيطانِ
I did not find him accommodating, so I gave
I did not find him loyal, so I gave up
my share of him as alms to the devil.
My share of him to Satan

Would that my lot with him and his like were that
I wish that my share of him and his like would be
my eye should not see him, and he should not see me.
That my eyes do not see him and he does not see me

I praise God—how corrupt people have become,
I praise God, how people have been corrupted
and how scarce loyalty is among brothers.
And loyalty among brothers has diminished
