أَعَينَيَّO my two eyes جوداpour forth generously (you two) وَابكِياand weep (you two) وُدَّthe affection of صالِحِSalih
أَعَينَيَّ جودا وَابكِيا وُدَّ صالِحِ
وَهيجاand rouse (you two) عَلَيهِover it مُعوِلاتِloudly wailing women النَوائِحِthe female mourners
وَهيجا عَلَيهِ مُعوِلاتِ النَوائِحِ
O my two eyes, pour forth tears and weep for Salih's affection;
My eyes shed tears abundantly, and I mourn for my beloved friend
And rouse the wailing mourners to lament it.
And lament for him with cries of grief.
فَماfor not زالَceased to be سُلطاناًa ruler أَخٌa brother ليof mine أَوَدُّهُI love him
فَما زالَ سُلطاناً أَخٌ لي أَوَدُّهُ
فَيَقطَعُنيand he cuts me off جُرماًwrongfully قَطيعَةَthe severance of ties by صالِحِSalih
فَيَقطَعُني جُرماً قَطيعَةَ صالِحِ
For a brother of mine whom I love has always been a ruler,
A brother whom I love remains supreme authority,
And he wrongfully cuts me off as Salih does.
Yet his misdeeds have severed me like the parting of Salih.
