أَياO رَبِّmy Lord ياO ذاPossessor of العَرشِthe Throne أَنتَYou رَحيمُmerciful
وَأَنتَand You بِماof what تُخفيconceal الصُدورُthe breasts عَليمُall-knowing
O my Lord, O Possessor of the Throne, You are merciful.
O Lord, O Owner of the Throne, You are Merciful
And You know what the breasts conceal.
And You know what hearts conceal, All-Knowing
فَياso O رَبِّmy Lord هَبgrant ليto me مِنكَfrom You حِلماًforbearance فَإِنَّنيfor indeed I
أَرىI see الحِلمَforbearance لَمdid not يَندَمregret عَلَيهِover it حَليمُa forbearing man
So, my Lord, grant me forbearance from You, for I
So my Lord grant me wisdom, for I see
see that no forbearing man has regretted forbearance.
The wise are never regretful of being forbearing
وَياand O رَبِّmy Lord هَبgrant ليto me مِنكَfrom You عَزماًresolve عَلىtoward التُقىpiety
أُقيمُI stand firm بِهِthrough it ماas long as عِشتُI live حَيثُwherever أُقيمُI dwell
And, my Lord, grant me resolve from You to be pious,
And my Lord grant me resolve for piety
by which I may stand firm as long as I live, wherever I dwell.
By which I live righteously wherever I reside
أَلاtake heed إِنَّindeed تَقوىreverence for اللَهِGod أَكرَمُthe noblest نِسبَةٍlineage
تَسامىrose high بِهاthrough it عِندَat الفَخارِboasting of honor كَريمُa noble man
Behold, reverence for God is the noblest lineage,
Indeed, piety of God is the noblest lineage
by which a noble man rises when honor is claimed.
By which one is exalted among the generous when remembered
إِذاif ماemphatic particle اجتَنَبتَyou avoided الناسَpeople إِلّاexcept عَلىon the basis of التُقىpiety
خَرَجتَyou departed مِنَfrom الدُنياthis world وَأَنتَwhile you are سَليمُunharmed
If you avoid people's company unless it is founded on piety,
When you avoid people except with piety
you will leave this world unharmed.
You will depart the world unharmed and safe
أَراكَI see you امرَأًa man تَرجوyou hope for مِنَfrom اللَهِGod عَفوَهُHis pardon
وَأَنتَyet you are عَلىin ماwhat لاnot يُحِبُّHe loves مُقيمُpersisting
I see you as a man who hopes for God's pardon,
I see you hoping for God's pardon
yet you persist in what He does not love.
While persisting upon what He does not love
فَحَتّىso until مَتىwhen تَعصيyou disobey وَيَعفوand He pardons إِلىuntil مَتىwhen
تَبارَكَblessed is رَبّيmy Lord إِنَّهُindeed He لَرَحيمُis truly merciful
So how long will you disobey while He pardons—how long?
So how long will you sin and He pardon?
Blessed is my Lord; He is indeed merciful.
Blessed is my Lord, truly He is Merciful
وَلَوand if قَدalready تَوَسَّدتَyou took as a pillow الثَرىthe soil وَافتَرَشتَهُand spread it beneath you
لَقَدsurely صِرتَyou have become لايَلويdoes not turn back عَلَيكَtoward you حَميمُa dear friend
And if you have made the earth your pillow and spread it beneath you,
Had you made the earth your pillow and settled upon it
you will have become one to whom no dear friend turns.
It would not shelter you from the scorching heat
تَدُلُّyou point the way عَلىto التَقوىpiety وَأَنتَwhile you are مُقَصِّرٌfalling short
أَياO مَنone who يُداويtreats الناسَpeople وَهوَwhile he is سَقيمُill
You point the way to piety, yet you fall short,
You preach piety while falling short
O you who treat people while you yourself are ill.
O you who heal others while sick!
وَإِنَّand indeed امرَأًa man لايَرتَجيdo not hope for الناسُpeople نَفعَهُbenefit from him
وَلَمand did not يَأمَنواfeel safe مِنهُfrom him الأَذيharm لَلَئيمُis truly base
And a man from whom people hope for no benefit,
A man who is not hoped to benefit
and from whose harm they do not feel safe, is truly base.
And not safe from harm is mean
وَإِنَّand indeed امرَأًa man لَمdid not يَجعَلِmake البِرَّrighteousness كَنزَهُhis treasure
وَإِنeven if كانَتِwere الدُنياthe world لَهُhis لَعَديمُis truly destitute
And a man who has not made righteousness his treasure,
A man who did not make righteousness his treasure
even if the world were his, is truly destitute.
Though the world is his, is deficient
وَإِنَّand indeed امرَأًa man لَمdid not يُلهِهِdistract him اليَومَtoday عَنfrom غَدٍtomorrow
تَخَوُّفُfear ماwhat يَأتيcomes بِهِwith it لَحَكيمُis truly wise
And a man not distracted today from tomorrow
A man not distracted today from tomorrow
by fear of what it may bring is truly wise.
Fearing what it brings is wise
وَمَنand who يَأمَنِtrusts الأَيّامَthe days جَهلاًin ignorance وَقَدthough already رَأىhe has seen
لَهُنَّbelonging to them صُروفاًvicissitudes كَيدَهُنَّtheir guile عَظيمُgreat
And who would trust the days in ignorance, though he has seen
And one who feels safe from days out of ignorance
their vicissitudes? Their guile is great.
Despite having seen their ups and downs is unwise
فَإِنَّfor indeed مُنىhopes الدُنياthis world غُرورٌa delusion لِأَهلِهاto its people
أَبىrefused اللَهُGod أَنthat يَبقىendure عَلَيهِupon it نَعيمُbliss
For the hopes of this world are a delusion to its people;
The pleasures of life are false for its people
God has refused to let any bliss endure there.
God refused to let any bliss remain
وَأَذلَلتُand I humbled نَفسيmy soul اليَومَtoday كَيماso that أُعِزَّهاI may exalt it
غَداًtomorrow حَيثُwhere يَبقىremains العِزُّhonor ليfor me وَيَدومُand endures
And I have humbled my soul today so that I may exalt it
I humbled myself today to honor myself tomorrow
tomorrow, where honor remains mine and endures.
Where honor remains and lasts for me
وَلِلحَقِّand for truth بُرهانٌproof وَلِلمَوتِand for death فِكرَةٌreflection
وَمُعتَبَرٌand a lesson لِلعالَمينَfor all mankind قَديمُage-old
And truth has its proof, and death offers reflection
Truth has proof, death has a reminder
and an age-old lesson for all mankind.
And a lesson for both worlds timeless
