أَياO غَمّيmy grief لِغَمِّكَfor your grief ياO خَليليmy dear friend
أَيا غَمّي لِغَمِّكَ يا خَليلي
وَياand O وَيليmy woe عَلَيكَover you وَياand O عَويليmy lament
وَيا وَيلي عَلَيكَ وَيا عَويلي
O my grief for your grief, my dear friend!
Oh my sorrow, for your sorrow, oh my friend
And oh, my anguish over you, and oh, my lament!
Oh my woe for you, and oh my lament
يَعِزُّis painful عَلَيَّfor me أَنَّكَthat you لاdo not تَرانيsee me
يَعِزُّ عَلَيَّ أَنَّكَ لا تَراني
وَإِنّيand indeed I لاdo not أَراكَsee you وَلاnor رَسوليmy messenger
وَإِنّي لا أَراكَ وَلا رَسولي
It pains me that you do not see me,
It grieves me that you do not see me
And I do not see you, nor does my messenger;
And I do not see you, nor my messenger
وَأَنَّكَand that you فيin مَحَلِّa place of أَذىًsuffering وَضَنكٍand hardship
وَأَنَّكَ في مَحَلِّ أَذىً وَضَنكٍ
وَلَيسَand there is not إِلىto لِقائِكَmeeting you مِنany سَبيلِway
وَلَيسَ إِلى لِقائِكَ مِن سَبيلِ
And that you are in a place of suffering and hardship,
That you are in a place of harm and distress
And there is no way to meet you;
And there is no way for me to meet you
وَأَنّيand that I لَستُam not أَملِكُable عَنكَfrom you دَفعاًwarding off harm
وَأَنّي لَستُ أَملِكُ عَنكَ دَفعاً
وَقَدand indeed فوجِئتُI was taken unawares بِالخَطبِby the calamity الجَليلِgrave
وَقَد فوجِئتُ بِالخَطبِ الجَليلِ
And that I have no power to ward off harm from you,
And that I have no power to ward it off from you
And I have been struck unawares by this grave calamity.
And I was struck by the momentous events
