فَفيfor in البِرِّrighteousness وَالتَقوىand piety لَكَfor you المَسلَكُthe path النَهجُclear
Lighten your burden of this world, that you may be saved.
Lighten your burden of worldly things, perhaps you may be saved
For in righteousness and piety lies your clear path.
For in righteous conduct and piety lies the path and method
رَأَيتُI saw خَرابَthe ruin of الدارِthe dwelling يَحكيهِdepicts it لَهوَهاits revelry
إِذاwhen اجتَمَعَcame together المِزمارُthe pipe وَالعودُand the lute وَالصَنجُand the cymbals
I saw the dwelling's ruin reflected in its revelry,
I have seen the ruin of the house recounted by its vanity
When the pipe, the lute, and the cymbals came together.
When the flute, lute and lyre gather
أَلاtake heed! أَيُّهاO you المَغرورُdeluded one هَلis there? لَكَfor you حُجَّةٌa plea
فَأَنتَso you بِهاwith it يَومَthe day of القِيامَةِresurrection مُحتَجُّpleading a case
Listen, O deluded one: do you have a plea
O deluded one, will you have an argument
With which to defend yourself on the Day of Resurrection?
With which to contend on the Day of Resurrection?
تَدَبَّرponder صُروفَthe vicissitudes of الحادِثاتِevents فَإِنَّهاfor they

Ponder the vicissitudes of events, for they
Contemplate the turns of events, for in every moment
Leave abrasions in your heart time and again.
They inflict sorrow upon your heart
وَلاand do not تَحسَبِthink الحالاتِcircumstances تَبقىlast لِأَهلِهاfor those who have them
فَقَدfor it may تَستَقيمُbecome straight الحالُthe situation طَوراًfor a time وَتَعوَجُّand grow crooked
And do not think people's circumstances stay the same:
Do not assume conditions will remain for their people
For circumstances may straighten for a time, then turn crooked.
For a situation may go straight then bend
مَنِwhoever استَطرَفَfinds novel الشَيءَthe thing استَلَذَّtakes pleasure in اطِّرافَهُacquiring it as new
وَمَنand whoever مَلَّtires of شَيئاًa thing كانَthere is فيهِin it لَهُfor him مَجُّrevulsion
Whoever finds a thing novel delights in acquiring it;
Whoever enjoys something enjoys its subtleties
And whoever tires of a thing feels revulsion toward it.
And whoever dislikes something finds fault in it
إِذاwhen لَجَّpersisted obstinately أَهلُthe people of اللُؤمِbaseness طاشَتreeled عُقولُهُمtheir minds
كَذاكَthus لَجاجاتُfits of obstinacy اللِئامِthe base إِذاwhen لَجّواthey persisted obstinately
When the base persist in obstinacy, their minds reel.
When the vile act rashly, their minds are distraught
Such are the stubborn fits of the base when they persist.
Such is the contention of scoundrels when contending
تَبارَكَblessed is مَنthe One لَمdid not تَشفِheal إِلّاexcept بِهِthrough Him الرُقىincantations

Blessed is He through whom alone incantations heal,
Blessed is He who alone cures worries
And through whom alone fire and snow are joined in harmony.
And who by Him alone fire and ice befriend
