كَأَنَّكَas though you فيamong أُهَيلِكَyour dear family قَدalready أُتيتاyou were overtaken by death
كَأَنَّكَ في أُهَيلِكَ قَد أُتيتا
وَفيand among الجيرانِthe neighbors وَيحَكَalas for you قَدalready نُعيتاyour death was announced
وَفي الجيرانِ وَيحَكَ قَد نُعيتا
It is as though you have already been overtaken by death among your dear family,
It seems you returned to your family as though
And among the neighbors—alas for you!—your death has already been announced.
Among the neighbors they announced your death
كَأَنَّكَas though you كُنتَyou were بَينَهُمamong them غَريباًa stranger
كَأَنَّكَ كُنتَ بَينَهُم غَريباً
بِكَأسِfrom a cup of المَوتِdeath صِرفاًunmixed قَدalready سَقيتاyou were given to drink
بِكَأسِ المَوتِ صِرفاً قَد سَقيتا
It is as though you were a stranger among them,
It seems you were a stranger among them
Already made to drink the cup of death, unmixed.
Given a cup of death to drink
أَصبَحتِhave become المَساكِنُthe dwellings مِنكَwithout you قَفراًdesolate
أَصبَحتِ المَساكِنُ مِنكَ قَفراً
كَأَنَّكَas though you لَمnot تَكُنyou had been فيهاin them غَنيتاyou had dwelt
كَأَنَّكَ لَم تَكُن فيها غَنيتا
The dwellings have become desolate without you,
The dwellings became desolate without you
As though you had never lived in them.
As if you never lived in them and sang
كَأَنَّكَas though you وَالحُتوفُand deaths لَهاthey have سِهامٌarrows
كَأَنَّكَ وَالحُتوفُ لَها سِهامٌ
مُفَوَّقَةٌnocked بِسَهمِكَwith your arrow قَدalready رُميتاyou were shot
مُفَوَّقَةٌ بِسَهمِكَ قَد رُميتا
It is as though—while death has arrows
It seems you and fate had arrows
nocked—you have already been struck by the arrow meant for you.
Aimed by your fateful arrow and shot
وَإِنَّكَand indeed you إِذwhen خُلِقتَyou were created خُلِقتَyou were created فَرداًalone
وَإِنَّكَ إِذ خُلِقتَ خُلِقتَ فَرداً
إِلىuntil أَجَلٍan appointed time تُجيبُyou answer إِذاwhen دُعيتاyou are called
إِلى أَجَلٍ تُجيبُ إِذا دُعيتا
And indeed, when you were created, you were created alone,
You were created alone
Until an appointed time; you answer when you are called.
To answer when called by death
إِلىuntil أَجَلٍan appointed time تُعَدُّare counted لَكَfor you اللَياليthe nights
إِلى أَجَلٍ تُعَدُّ لَكَ اللَيالي
إِذاwhen وَفَّيتَyou have completed عِدَّتَهاtheir number فَنيتاyou perish
إِذا وَفَّيتَ عِدَّتَها فَنيتا
Until an appointed time, the nights are counted for you;
To a time when the nights count down for you
When you have completed their number, you perish.
When you fulfill that count and pass away
وَكُلُّand every فَتىًyoung man تُغافِصُهُtakes him unawares المَناياdeath
وَكُلُّ فَتىً تُغافِصُهُ المَنايا
وَيُبليهِand wears him away الزَمانُtime كَماjust as بَليتاyou have decayed
وَيُبليهِ الزَمانُ كَما بَليتا
And every young man is caught unawares by death,
Every youth that death forgives
And time wears him away, just as you have been worn away.
And time wears down as it wore you down
فَكَمso how many مِنof موجَعٍa grief-stricken person يَبكيكَweeps for you شَجواًin sorrow
فَكَم مِن موجَعٍ يَبكيكَ شَجواً
وَمَسرورِand one glad الفُؤادِof heart بِماat what لَقيتاyou have encountered
وَمَسرورِ الفُؤادِ بِما لَقيتا
So how many a grief-stricken person weeps for you in sorrow,
So many weep in agony for you
And how many are glad at heart at what has befallen you.
While those you left rejoice in what you met
