لَقَدindeed طالَhas lasted long ياO دُنياworld إِلَيكِtoward you رُكونيmy reliance
وَدامَand has continued لُزوميmy clinging to ضِلَّتيmy error وَفُتونيand my infatuation
Indeed, O world, my reliance on you has lasted long.
For long, O world, my repose in you persisted
And I have kept clinging to my error and infatuation.
And long my errors lasted, and temptations twisted,
وَطالَand has lasted long إِخائيmy friendship فيكِin you قَوماًpeople أَراهُمI see them
وَكُلُّهُمُand each of them مُستَأثِرٌtaking sole possession بِكِof you دونيexcluding me
And long have I befriended people in you whom I find
And long my brethren's stay with you - but they
each claiming you for himself, to my exclusion.
Monopolized you wholly, leaving me no say.
وَكُلُّهُمُand each of them عَنّيfor me قَليلٌlittle غِنائُهُhis help
إِذاwhen غَلِقَتbecame forfeit فيamong الهالِكينَthe perishing رُهونيmy pledges
And each of them is of little help to me
And little is their gain if closed on loss were reckoned
when my pledges are forfeited among the perishing.
The pledge, while into nothingness my hopes were sunken.
فَياso, O رَبِّmy Lord إِنَّindeed الناسَpeople لاnot يُنصِفونَنيthey treat me fairly
وَكَيفَand how? وَلَوand even if أَنصَفتُهُمI treated them fairly ظَلَمونيthey wronged me
So, O my Lord, people do not treat me fairly.
My Lord, men do me wrong, no justice I'm accorded,
And how could they? Even if I treated them fairly, they would wrong me.
And when I'm just to them, I'm wrongly contravened.
وَإِنand if كانَwas ليmine شَيءٌanything تَصَدَّواthey came forward لِأَخذِهِto take it
وَإِنand if جِئتُI came أَبغيI seek شَيئَهُمwhat is theirs مَنَعونيthey refused me
And if I have anything, they set about taking it.
If I possess a thing, they wish to take it from me,
And if I come seeking what is theirs, they refuse me.
If I seek out their goods, access they've barred and banned me.
وَإِنand if نالَهُمreached them رِفديmy bounty فَلاthen no شُكرَgratitude عِندَهُمwith them
وَإِنand if أَناI لَمnot أَبذُلgive freely لَهُمto them شَتَمونيthey insulted me
And if my bounty reaches them, they show no gratitude.
If I extend a hand, no gratitude's evinced,
And if I do not give to them, they insult me.
If not, they censure me, no generous deed evidenced.
وَإِنand if وَجَدواthey found عِنديwith me رَخاءًprosperity تَقَرَّبواthey drew near
وَإِنand if نَزَلَتbefell بيupon me شِدَّةٌhardship خَذَلونيthey abandoned me
And if they find me prosperous, they draw near.
When comfort's mine, they flock to me to claim a portion,
And if hardship befalls me, they abandon me.
When hardship comes, I'm left alone to face misfortune.
وَإِنand if طَرَقَتنيvisited me نَكبَةٌa calamity فَكِهواthey rejoiced بِهاin it
وَإِنand if صَحِبَتنيaccompanied me نِعمَةٌa blessing حَسَدونيthey envied me
And if calamity visits me, they delight in it.
If I am struck by fate, they laugh with glee unhidden,
And if a blessing accompanies me, they envy me.
If grace smiles on me, envy makes sure it's chidden.
سَأَمنَعُI will restrain قَلبيmy heart أَنto يَحِنَّyearn إِلَيهِمُfor them
وَأَحجُبُand I will veil عَنهُمfrom them ناظِريmy gaze وَجُفونيand my eyelids
I shall keep my heart from yearning for them,
I'll lock my heart that it incline no more toward them,
and veil my gaze and eyelids from them.
My eyes and eyelids equally from sight of them.
وَأَقطَعُand I will pass أَيّاميmy days بِيَومِwith a day سُهولَةٍease
أُزَجّيI while away بِهِwith it عُمريmy life وَيَومَand a day حُزونِhardship
And I shall pass my days—a day of ease,
I'll live a life serene, keep sorrow at a distance,
in which I while away my life, and a day of hardship.
And pass my days in peace, tranquil and free from grievance.
أَلاbehold إِنَّindeed أَصفىthe purest العَيشِliving ماthat which طابَproved good غِبُّهُits outcome
وَماand what نِلتُهُI attained it فيin عِفَّةٍself-restraint وَسُكونِand tranquility
Indeed, the purest living is that whose outcome is good,
For sure, the choicest life is one where, free of clamor,
and what I have gained in self-restraint and tranquility.
Far from the throng, in purity and calm, I savor.
