إِنَّindeed القَريرَةَcontented عَينُهُhis eye عَبدُa servant
إِنَّ القَريرَةَ عَينُهُ عَبدُ
خَشِيَfeared الإِلَهَGod وَعَيشُهُand his living قَصدُmoderation
خَشِيَ الإِلَهَ وَعَيشُهُ قَصدُ
Indeed, he whose eye is content is a servant
The servant with enlightened eyes is Abd,
Who fears God and lives in moderation.
Who fears God and lives simply.
عَبدٌa servant قَليلُlittle in النَومِsleep مُجتَهِدٌstriving diligently
عَبدٌ قَليلُ النَومِ مُجتَهِدٌ
لِلَّهِfor God كُلُّall فِعالِهِhis deeds رُشدُright guidance
لِلَّهِ كُلُّ فِعالِهِ رُشدُ
A servant who sleeps little and strives
A servant who sleeps little and works hard,
For God; all his deeds are upright.
All his deeds guided rightly for God.
نَزِهٌdetached عَنِfrom الدُنياthis world وَباطِلِهاand its vanities
نَزِهٌ عَنِ الدُنيا وَباطِلِها
لاneither عَرضُgoods يَشغَلُهُdistract him وَلاnor نَقدُcash
لا عَرضُ يَشغَلُهُ وَلا نَقدُ
Detached from this world and its vanities,
Detached from this world and its vanities,
Neither goods nor cash distract him.
Neither wealth nor money distract him.
مُستَجهِلٌdeemed foolish فيfor the sake of اللَهِGod مُحتَقِرٌdespised
مُستَجهِلٌ في اللَهِ مُحتَقِرٌ
هَزلُjesting المَخافَةِfear عِندَهُto him جِدُّseriousness
هَزلُ المَخافَةِ عِندَهُ جِدُّ
Deemed foolish and despised for God's sake,
Humbly ignorant in God, he looks down on pride;
Even jesting about fear is serious to him.
To him, jest of fear is serious deed.
مُتَذَلِّلٌhumbling himself لِلَّهِbefore God مُرتَقِبٌawaiting
مُتَذَلِّلٌ لِلَّهِ مُرتَقِبٌ
ماwhat لَيسَthere is no مِنfrom إِتيانِهِits coming بُدُّescape
ما لَيسَ مِن إِتيانِهِ بُدُّ
Humble before God, he awaits
Submissive to God, hopeful in watch,
That whose coming cannot be escaped.
No way but to keep doing as He bids.
رَفَضَrejected الحَياةَlife عَلىdespite حَلاوَتِهاits sweetness
رَفَضَ الحَياةَ عَلى حَلاوَتِها
وَاِختارَand chose ماwhat فيهِin it لَهُfor him الخُلدُeverlasting life
وَاِختارَ ما فيهِ لَهُ الخُلدُ
He rejected life despite its sweetness,
He refused life, however sweet,
And chose what offers him everlasting life.
And chose what grants him eternity.
يَكفيهِsuffices him ماwhat بَلَغَhe reached المَحَلَّthe destination بِهِwith it
يَكفيهِ ما بَلَغَ المَحَلَّ بِهِ
لاnot يَشتَكيhe complains إِنif نابَهُbefell him جَهدُhardship
لا يَشتَكي إِن نابَهُ جَهدُ
What lets him reach his destination suffices him;
He's content with what lot God gave him,
He does not complain if hardship befalls him.
Not complaining if hardship comes his way.
فَاِشدُدso tighten يَدَيكَyour two hands إِذاwhen ظَفِرتَyou have found بِهِhim
فَاِشدُد يَدَيكَ إِذا ظَفِرتَ بِهِ
ماnot العَيشُliving إِلّاexcept القَصدُmoderation وَالزُهدُand renunciation
ما العَيشُ إِلّا القَصدُ وَالزُهدُ
So hold him fast with both hands when you find him;
So hold fast if you gain such a servant,
Life is nothing but moderation and renunciation.
For life is but moderation and detachment.
