طَلَبتُI sought المُستَقَرَّthe resting place بِكُلِّin every أَرضٍland
فَلَمbut did not أَرَI find ليfor me بِأَرضٍin any land مُستَقَرّاa resting place
I sought a resting place in every land,
I sought a home in every land
but found no resting place for me in any land.
But found no place to call my own
أَطَعتُI obeyed مَطامِعيmy cravings فَاِستَعبَدَتنيso they enslaved me
وَلَوand if أَنّيthat I قَنِعتُI had been content لَكُنتُthen I would have been حُرّاfree
I obeyed my cravings, so they enslaved me;
I served ambitions and was enslaved
and had I been content, I would have been free.
Had I been satisfied I would be free
