أُؤَمِّلُI hope أَنto أَخَلَّدَlive forever وَالمَناياwhile the fates of death
أُؤَمِّلُ أَن أَخَلَّدَ وَالمَنايا
يَثِبنَleap عَلَيَّupon me مِنfrom كُلِّevery النَواحيthe sides
يَثِبنَ عَلَيَّ مِن كُلِّ النَواحي
I hope to live forever, while the fates of death
I hope to defy death, though it comes at me
leap upon me from every side.
From every side, enclosing stealthily.
وَماand not أَدريI know إِذاwhen أَمسَيتُI reach evening حَيّاًalive
وَما أَدري إِذا أَمسَيتُ حَيّاً
لَعَلّيperhaps I لاnot أَعيشُI live إِلىuntil الصَباحِthe morning
لَعَلّي لا أَعيشُ إِلى الصَباحِ
And when I reach evening alive, I do not know—
I know not if I'll live to see the morn
perhaps I shall not live until morning.
Perhaps I'll not survive until the dawn
