آمَنتُI believed بِاللَهِin God وَأَيقَنتُand I became certain
وَاللَهُand God حَسبيsufficient for me حَيثُماwherever كُنتُI may be
I have believed in God and become certain.
I have believed in God and become certain,
And God suffices me wherever I may be.
And God is enough for me wherever I may be.
كَمhow many مِنof أَخٍa brother ليof mine خانَنيbetrayed me وُدُّهُhis love
وَلاand not تَبَدَّلتُI changed وَلاand not خُنتُI betrayed
How many a brother of mine—his love has betrayed me!
How many a brother whose love has betrayed me,
Yet I have neither changed nor betrayed.
Yet I have not changed nor been disloyal.
الحَمدُpraise لِلَّهِto God عَلىfor صُنعِهِHis work
إِنّيindeed I إِذاwhen عَزَّbecame unyielding أَخيmy brother هُنتُI yielded
Praise be to God for His work.
Praise be to God for His making;
Indeed, when my brother is unyielding, I yield.
When my brother prospers, I rejoice.
ماhow أَعجَبَwondrous الدُنياthe world وَتَصريفَهاand its changes
كَمhow often لَوَّنَتنيit colored me فَتَلَوَّنتُso I changed color
How wondrous the world and its changes!
How wondrous is this world and its changes!
How often it has colored me, and so I have changed color!
How it has colored me as I conform!
لِلبَينِfor parting يَومٌa day أَناI رَهنٌheld in pledge بِهِto it
لَوif قَدindeed دَناdrew near يَوميmy day لَقَدsurely بِنتُI departed
Parting has a day, to which I am pledged;
For the distant one I yearn for a day I'm pledged to.
Were my day to draw near, I would surely depart.
If my day drew near, I would surely have built.
ماnot أَناI إِلّاbut خائِضٌone wading فيthrough مُنىًwishes
قَبَّحتُهاI deemed them ugly طَوراًat times وَحَسَّنتُand I deemed them beautiful
I am only one wading through wishes;
I am but swimming in wishes,
At times I have deemed them ugly, and at others, beautiful.
Now despising them, now finding them fair.
ياO عَجَباًwhat a wonder مِنّيat me وَماand what اِختَرتُI chose مِنof
شَكّيmy doubt عَلىover ماwhat قَدalready تَيَقَّنتُI knew for certain
How strange I am, and how strange my choice of
Wondrous am I, having chosen among my doubts
my doubt over what I have known for certain!
To complain of what I have become certain of.
ياO رَبَّmany a أَمرٍmatter زَلَّslipped away عَنّيfrom me إِذاwhen
ماemphatic particle قُلتُI said إِنّيindeed I قَدindeed تَمَكَّنتُI gained mastery
Ah, how many a matter slipped away from me when
O Lord, a slip I made when I said
I said, "I have indeed gained mastery!"
That I had become well established.
وَالدَهرُand time لاnot تَفنىcome to an end أَعاجيبُهُits marvels
إِنif أَناI لِلدَهرِto time تَفَطَّنتُI paid heed
And time's marvels never end,
And time will not run out of wonders,
if I pay heed to time.
If I for timesharpened my wits.
