أَسِفتُI grieved لِفَقدِat the loss of الأَصمَعِيِّal-Asma‘i لَقَدindeed مَضىhe departed
أَسِفتُ لِفَقدِ الأَصمَعِيِّ لَقَد مَضى
حَميداًworthy of praise لَهُfor him فيin كُلِّevery صالِحَةٍgood deed سَهمُa share
حَميداً لَهُ في كُلِّ صالِحَةٍ سَهمُ
I grieved at the loss of al-Asma‘i; indeed, he departed,
I mourn the loss of al-Asma'i, he is gone
Worthy of praise, with a share in every good deed.
With honor in every righteous deed his arrow flew
تَقَضَّتcame to an end بَشاشاتُjoys المَجالِسِthe gatherings بَعدَهُafter him
تَقَضَّت بَشاشاتُ المَجالِسِ بَعدَهُ
وَوَدَّعَناand bade us farewell إِذwhen وَدَّعَhe bade farewell الأُنسُfellowship وَالعِلمُand learning
وَوَدَّعَنا إِذ وَدَّعَ الأُنسُ وَالعِلمُ
The joys of gatherings came to an end after him,
The joys of gatherings passed after him
And fellowship and learning bade us farewell when he did.
When companionship and knowledge bid farewell
وَقَدand indeed كانَwas نَجمُthe star العِلمِof learning فيناamong us حَياتَهُthroughout his life
وَقَد كانَ نَجمُ العِلمِ فينا حَياتَهُ
فَلَمّاso when انقَضَتended أَيّامُهُhis days أَفَلَset النَجمُthe star
فَلَمّا انقَضَت أَيّامُهُ أَفَلَ النَجمُ
And the star of learning was among us throughout his life;
He was the star of knowledge shining among us
So when his days ended, the star set.
When his days ended, the star faded away
