    أَرى خَليلي كَما يَراني

    I am only for whoever seeks me;

    I regard my friend as he regards me.

    As long as I command my gaze, I do not regard

    the standing of one who does not regard mine.

    Who puts his hopes in those far away

    if those nearby have not received his kindness?

    I have become independent of those in this world,

    through my Creator, in all my affairs.

    لَو جَهَدَ الخَلقُ ما عَداني

    And I have sustenance until I die;

    even if all creation strove, it would not pass me by.

    Do not hope for kindness from one who does not

    behave well except under humiliation.

    So, through God, be independent of so-and-so,

    and of so-and-so, and of so-and-so.

    And do not abandon a lawful livelihood

    of which you have clear knowledge.

    For wealth from lawful sources is a support

    for honor, face, and tongue.

    مِفتاحُهُ العَجزُ وَالتَواني

    And poverty is humiliation with a door;

    its key is incapacity and sloth.

    هُنَّ مِنَ اللَهِ في ضَمانِ

    And my Lord's provision has many forms;

    they are guaranteed by God.

    لَيسَ لَهُ في العُلُوِّ ثانِ

    Glory be to Him who has always been exalted;

    He has no peer in loftiness.

    فَكُلُّ حَيٍّ سِواهُ فانِ

    He decreed death for His creation;

    so every living being but Him must perish.

    O my Lord, never have we wept because of an age

    without weeping for an age gone by.
