How many wondrous turns events bring,
How many surprising events occur,
and calamities linked to calamities.
With continuous calamities linked to calamities!
وَلَقَدand indeed تَفاوَتَhas receded مِنof شَبابِكَyour youth وَاِنقَضىand has passed away

ماthat which لَستَyou do not تُبصِرُهُsee it إِلَيكَto you بِآيِبِreturning
And indeed, some of your youth has receded and passed away—
Your youth has certainly faded away and vanished,
something you will not see returning to you.
Though you do not perceive what is coming to you.
تَبغيyou seek مِنَfrom الدُنياthe world الكَثيرَmuch وَإِنَّماand only

يَكفيكَsuffices you مِنهاfrom it مِثلُthe equivalent of زادِprovisions الراكِبِthe rider
You seek much from the world, yet
You desire much from this life, yet
you need from it no more than a rider's provisions.
What suffices you is like the provision of a rider.
لاdo not يُعجِبَنَّكَlet it delight you ماwhat تَرىyou see فَكَأَنَهُfor it is as though
قَدalready زالَhas vanished عَنكَfrom you زَوالَthe passing of أَمسِyesterday الذاهِبِgone by
Do not let what you see delight you, for it is as though
You are not pleased with what you see, as though
it had already vanished from you like yesterday gone by.
It has passed from you like yesterday that went away.
أَصبَحتَyou have come to be فيamid أَسلابِthe spoils of قَومٍpeople قَدalready مَضَواhave passed away

You now dwell amid the spoils of people who have passed away;
You have woken up amid the belongings of people now gone,
they inherited mutual plunder, one plunderer from another.
Who inherited loss upon loss from each other.
