لَكَمindeed, how many فَجَعَbereaved الدَهرُTime مِنof والِدٍa father
وَكَمand how many أَثكَلَbereaved of a child الدَهرُTime مِنof والِدَهa mother
How many a father has Time bereaved!
How many a father has time aggrieved,
And how many a mother has Time bereaved of a child!
And how many a mother has it left bereaved,
وَكَمand how many تَرَكَleft الدَهرُTime مِنof سَيِّدٍa lord
يَنوءُstruggles to rise عَلىon قَدَمٍa foot واحِدَهsingle
And how many a lord has Time left
And how many a lord has it caused to grieve,
Struggling to stand on a single foot!
Who totters on one foot that's weakly heaved.
وَكَمand how many قَدindeed رَأَيناwe have seen فَتىًa youth ماجِداًnoble
تَفَرَّعَsprang forth فيin أُسرَةٍa family ماجِدَهnoble
And how many a noble youth we have seen,
And how oft have we seen a hero brave
Sprung from a noble family,
Shoot branches in a family noble and grave,
يُشَمِّصُdrives back فيin الحَربِbattle بِالدارِعينَthe armored warriors
وَيُطعِمُand feeds فيon اللَيلَةِthe night البارِدَهcold
Who drives armored warriors back in battle,
Fending the enemy off with armor bright,
And feeds others on a cold night.
Feeding the poor on a cold dark night.
رَماهُstruck him الزَمانُTime بِسَهمِwith the arrow of الرَدىdeath
فَأَصبَحَand so became فيamong الثُلَّةِthe throng الهامِدَهlifeless
Time struck him with death’s arrow,
Time shot him with the arrow of evil fate,
And he became one of the lifeless throng.
And he woke among the silent crowd sedate.
فَماso what ليis with me أَرىI see الناسَpeople فيin غَفلَةٍheedlessness
كَأَنَّas though قُلوبَهُمُtheir hearts سامِدَهheedless
So why do I see people heedless,
Why do I see people in negligence sunk?
As though their hearts were oblivious?
As if their hearts were deaf, cold, and shrunk.
شَرَواthey bought بِرِضاat the cost of the approval of اللَهِGod دُنياهُمُtheir worldly life
وَقَدand indeed عَلِمواthey knew أَنَّهاthat it بائِدَهwould perish
They bought their worldly life at the cost of God’s approval,
They sold God's pleasure for worldly pelf,
Though they knew it would perish.
Yet they know it shall soon disperse itself.
إِذاwhen أَصبَحواthey reach morning أَصبَحواthey become كَالأُسوlike li- (beginning of 'lions')
دِ-ons (completion of 'lions') باتَتspent the night مُجَوَّعَةًfamished حارِدَهenraged
When morning comes, they become like li-
At morn they rise like ragged lions blind,
ons that spent the night famished and enraged.
Kept hungry over night by the chill wind.
يُطيعونَthey obey فيin الغَيِّerror أَهواءَهُمtheir desires
وَقَدand indeed زَعَمواthey claimed أَنَّهاthat they (their desires) are راشِدَهrightly guided
They obey their desires in error,
They follow but their passions and conceits,
Yet they claim those desires are rightly guided.
Yet pretend to walk the path which reason meets.
تَرىyou see صُوَراًoutward forms تُعجِبُdelight الناظِرينَthe beholders
وَمَخبَرَةًand an inner nature تَحتَهاbeneath them فاسِدَهcorrupt
You see outward forms that delight the beholders,
You see faces that the lookers enchant,
And beneath them, a corrupt inner nature.
While underneath are hearts that are decadent.
