ماhow أَقطَعَutterly destructive الآجالَlife's appointed ends لِلآمالِto hopes
وَأَسرَعَand how swift الآمالَhopes فيwithin الآجالِallotted lifespans
How decisively life's appointed ends cut hopes short!
How the days cut short all hopes,
And how swift are hopes within life's allotted spans!
And hasten hopes within those days!
يُعجِبُنيpleases me حاليmy lot وَأَيُّand what حالِlot
يَبقىendures عَلىthrough الأَيّامِthe days وَاللَياليand the nights
My lot pleases me—but what lot
My state delights me, but what state
endures through days and nights?
Remains unchanged throughout the nights and days?
وَكُلُّand every شَيءٍthing فَإِلىthen toward زَوالِpassing away
ياO عَجَباًwonder مِنّيat me بِماwith what اشتِغاليmy preoccupation
And everything is bound to pass away.
All things must perish and decay;
How strange of me—what am I occupied with?
Strange that I keep myself so busy,
وَالمَوتُand death لاnot يَخطُرُoccurs ليto me بِبالِin mind
وَنُبلُهُand its arrows مُسرِعَةٌspeeding حِياليtoward me
While death never crosses my mind,
And death occurs not to my mind,
and its arrows speed toward me!
Though toward me it makes hasty way.
