وَاِدفَعِ الدُنيا بِما اِندَفَعَت
Get through worldly life by whatever means suffice.
Cut ties with this world as it has cut ties
And ward off the world with whatever wards it off.
Repel this world as it has repelled

وَاِترُكِ الدُنيا إِذا اِمتَنَعَت
And accept the world when it yields easily.
Embrace this world when it is smooth
And leave the world when it resists.
Leave this world when it is harsh

In vain the youth seeks a livelihood
And wealth lies in the soul, if it is content.
Wealth lies in contentment of the soul
