لِلناسِfor people فيin السَبقِthe race بَعدَafter اليَومِtoday مِضمارُa racecourse
وَالمُنتَهىand the end جَنَّةٌParadise لاno بُدَّescape أَوor نارُthe Fire
For people, beyond today lies a course to race upon;
People have a racecourse to run after life,
And the finish is inevitably Paradise or the Fire.
And the finish line is either Heaven or Hell.
المَوتُdeath حَقٌّa certainty وَلَكِنbut لَمnot أَزَلI cease مَرِحاًmerry
كَأَنَّas though مَعرِفَتيmy knowledge بِالمَوتِof death إِنكارُdenial
Death is certain, yet I have never ceased to be merry,
Death is true, yet I remain playful,
As though my knowledge of death were denial.
As if denying death is my way.
إِنّيindeed I لَأَعمُرُI surely inhabit داراًan abode ماnot لِساكِنِهاfor its inhabitant
أَهلٌfamily وَلاnor وَلَدٌa child يَبقىwill remain وَلاnor جارُa neighbor
Indeed, I dwell in an abode where, for its inhabitant,
I build a house with no family or neighbor to inhabit it.
No family, no child, and no neighbor will remain.
How miserable is the home of one disobeying the Creator!
فَبِئسَتِso wretched is الدارُthe abode لِلعاصيfor one who is disobedient لِخالِقِهِto his Creator
وَهيَand it لِمَنfor whoever يَتَّقيهِfears Him نِعمَتِhow excellent is الدارُthe abode
So wretched is the abode for one who disobeys his Creator;
Yet for the God-fearing, it is a blessed home.
And for one who fears Him, how excellent an abode it is!
