قَدalready أَهلَكَتhas destroyed قَبلَكَbefore you الأَحياءَthe living وَالمِلَلاand religious communities
Flee for your life from a deceptive world.
Flee with yourself from a deluded world
She has already destroyed the living and religious communities before you.
That has destroyed the alive and the apathetic before you
مُرٌّbitter مَذاقَهُits taste عُقباهاher outcome وَأَوَّلُهاand her beginning
غَدّارَةٌtreacherous تُكثِرُmultiplies الأَحزانَsorrows وَالعِلَلاand ailments
Bitter is the taste of her end and her beginning.
Bitter is its taste, its aftermath and its beginning
Treacherous, she multiplies sorrows and ailments.
A deceiver that increases sorrows and illnesses
إِنif ذُقتُI tasted حَلواءَهاher sweetness عادَتturned into عَواقِبُهاher consequences
مَرارَةًbitterness يَجتَويهاloathes it كُلُّeveryone مَنwho أَكَلاate
If I taste her sweetness, her consequences turn
If you taste its sweetness, its consequences return
to bitterness that everyone who has eaten loathes.
Bitterness that whoever ate suffers from
لَمdid not يَصفُrun clear شُربُa drink اِمرِئٍof a man فيهاin her فَأَعجَبَهُand so pleased him
إِلّاexcept that تَكَدَّرَturned muddy أَوor أَمسىbecame لَهُfor him وَشَلاa trickle
No man's drink in her has ever run clear and pleased him
No one has described drinking in it, so he was amazed
without turning muddy or becoming a mere trickle for him.
Except it became turbulent or he became crippled for it at night
زَوّالَةٌever fleeting ذاتُpossessing إِبدالٍreplacement بِصاحِبِهاof her companion
تَرضىis content بِطارِفِهاwith her new acquisition مِنinstead of تالِدٍa long-held possession بَدَلاas a replacement
Ever fleeting, she replaces her companion;
Fickle, exchanging its companion
she is content with her new acquisition in place of the old.
Pleased with any wanton in his place
يَرضىis content بِهاwith her ذاكَthat one مِنfrom هَذاthis one وَيَطعَمُand eats ذاthis one
ماwhat كانَwas هَذاthis one بِهِin it مِنfrom كَسبِهِhis earnings جَذِلاjoyful
One gladly accepts her from another, and one eats
This one is pleased with it instead of that one, and this one tastes
what another had rejoiced in as his earnings.
What that one did not gain honorably
تُذِلُّhumbles هَذاthis one لِهَذاbefore this one بَعدَafter عِزَّتِهِhis glory
وَقَدand perhaps تَرىyou see ذاthis one لِهَذاto this one مَرَّةًat one time خَوَلاa servant
She humbles this one before that one after his former glory,
It humiliates this one for that one after his glory
and you may at times see this one as that one's servant.
And you may see this one sometimes disgraced for that one
لَمdid not تَعتَذِرapologize قَطُّever مِنfor ذَنبٍa wrong إِلىto أَحَدٍanyone
وَالحُرُّand the noble man مُعتَذِرٌone who apologizes إِنif زَلَّةًa fault فَعَلاhe committed
She has never apologized to anyone for a wrong,
It has never apologized for a sin to anyone
whereas a noble man apologizes if he commits a fault.
While the free man apologizes if he makes a slip
هِيَshe الَّتيthe one who لَمdid not تَدُمendure مِنهاfrom her مَوَدَّتُهاher affection
لِصاحِبٍfor a companion قَطُّever إِلّاexcept that صارَمَتshe severed ties عَجَلاin haste
She is the one whose affection has never lasted
It is that whose affection for a companion
for any companion; she always severs ties in haste.
Has never lasted, but rather it quickly turned hostile
