I grieved at the death of Za'ida ibn Ma'n.
It is fitting that my grief for him should endure.

The finest of young men, Za'ida the pure,
Abu al-Abbas, was my brother and my close companion.

My people's young hero—and what a hero! Hidden from sight
With him were the shrouds beneath earth and sun-dried bricks.
أَلاAh! ياO قَبرَgrave of زائِدَةَZa'ida بنِson of مَعنٍMa'n

Ah, O grave of Za'ida ibn Ma'n,
I called to you to answer, but you did not answer me.
سَلِask الأَيّامَthe days عَنabout أَركانِpillars of قَوميmy people
أُصِبتُI was bereaved بِهِنَّthrough them رُكناًa pillar بَعدَafter رُكنِa pillar
Ask the days about the pillars of my people:
Through them I have been bereaved of pillar after pillar.
