أَلاAh! هَلis there إِلىto طولِlength of الحَياةِlife سَبيلُa way
وَأَنّيand how could it be? وَهَذاwhile this المَوتُdeath لَيسَdoes not يُقيلُgrant reprieve
Ah, is there a way to a long life?
And how could there be, when death grants no reprieve?
وَإِنّيand I وَإِنand though أَصبَحتُI have become بِالمَوتِof death موقِناًcertain
فَليyet I have أَمَلٌhope دونَthis side of اليَقينِcertainty طَويلُlong
And though I have become certain of death,
long hope still stands between me and that certainty.
وَلِلدَهرِand time has أَلوانٌhues تَروحُgo at evening وَتَغتَديand go forth at dawn
وَإِنَّand indeed نُفوساًsouls بَينَهُنَّamong them تَسيلُflow away
And time has hues that shift at dusk and dawn,
and souls flow away amid them.
وَمَنزِلِand an abode حَقٍّtrue لاno مُعَرَّجَstopping place دونَهُshort of it
لِكُلِّfor every امرِئٍperson يَوماًone day إِلَيهِto it رَحيلُa departure
And there is a true abode, with no stopping short of it;
each person will one day journey to it.
أَرىI see عِلَلَafflictions of الدُنياthe world عَلَيَّupon me كَثيرَةًmany
وَصاحِبُهاand its companion حَتّىuntil المَماتِdeath عَليلُailing
I see the many ills the world brings upon me,
and its companion is ailing until death.
إِذاwhen انقَطَعَتcomes to an end عَنّيfrom me مِنَof العَيشِlife مُدَّتيmy allotted span
فَإِنَّthen indeed غَناءَbenefit الباكِياتِthe weeping women قَليلُlittle
When my allotted span of life comes to an end,
then the weeping women will be of little help.
سَيُعرَضُpeople will turn away عَنfrom ذِكريmention of me وَتُنسىand will be forgotten مَوَدَّتيmy friendship
وَيَحدُثُand will arise بَعديafter me لِلخَليلِfor the close friend خَليلُa close friend
My memory will be neglected, and my friendship forgotten;
and after me my friend will find another friend.
وَفيand in الحَقِّtruth أَحياناًsometimes لَعَمريby my life مَرارَةٌbitterness
وَثِقلٌand a burden عَلىupon بَعضِsome of الرِجالِthe men ثَقيلُheavy
And truth is sometimes bitter, by my life,
and a heavy burden upon some men.
وَلَمand did not أَرَI see إِنساناًa person يَرىsees عَيبَthe fault of نَفسِهِhis own self
وَإِنand even though كانَhe is لاnot يَخفىis hidden عَلَيهِfrom him جَميلُa fine quality
And I have never seen anyone notice his own fault,
though no fine quality of his escapes him.
وَمَنand who ذاis it الَّذيwho يَنجوescapes مِنَfrom الناسِpeople سالِماًunscathed
وَلِلناسِwhile people have قالٌtalk بِالظُنونِbased on conjectures وَقيلُand hearsay
And who can escape unscathed from people,
when their talk and hearsay rest on conjecture?
أَجَلَّكَheld you in esteem قَومٌsome people حينَwhen صِرتَyou came إِلىinto الغِنىwealth
وَكُلُّand every غَنِيٍّrich man فيin العُيونِpeople's eyes جَليلُesteemed
People held you in esteem when you came into wealth,
and every rich man is esteemed in people's eyes.
وَلَيسَand is not الغِنىwealth إِلّاexcept غِناًwealth زَيَّنَadorned الفَتىthe young man
عَشِيَّةَon an evening يَقريhe feeds guests أَوor غَداةَon a morning يُنيلُhe bestows gifts
And wealth is only wealth that graces a young man,
at evening when he feeds guests, or in the morning when he gives.
وَلَمand did not يَفتَقِرbecome poor يَوماًever وَإِنand even if كانَhe is مُعدَماًpenniless
جَوادٌa generous man وَلَمand did not يَستَغنِbecome rich قَطُّever بَخيلُa miser
And never has he been poor, though penniless—
the generous man; nor has a miser ever been rich.
إِذاwhen مالَتِinclines الدُنياthe world إِلىtoward المَرءِa man رَغَّبَتit draws others
إِلَيهِtoward him وَمالَand incline الناسُpeople حَيثُwherever يَميلُhe inclines
When the world inclines toward a man, it draws others
to him, and people incline wherever he inclines.
