ماthere is no مِنany صَديقٍfriend وَإِنand even if تَمَّتis perfect مَوَدَّتُهُhis affection
ما مِن صَديقٍ وَإِن تَمَّت مَوَدَّتُهُ
يَوماًever بِأَبلَغَmore effective فيin الحاجاتِneeds مِنthan طَبَقِa platter
يَوماً بِأَبلَغَ في الحاجاتِ مِن طَبَقِ
No friend, however perfect his affection,
Is ever more effective in meeting needs than a platter.
إِذاwhen تَعَمَّمَputs on a turban بِالمِنديلِwith a napkin مُنطَلِقاًsetting out
إِذا تَعَمَّمَ بِالمِنديلِ مُنطَلِقاً
لَمdoes not يَخشَfear نَبوَةَrebuff بَوّابٍa doorkeeper وَلاnor غَلَقِa lock
لَم يَخشَ نَبوَةَ بَوّابٍ وَلا غَلَقِ
When it sets out with a napkin for a turban,
It fears neither a doorkeeper’s rebuff nor a lock.
لاdo not تُكذَبَنَّbe deceived فَإِنَّfor indeed الناسَpeople مُذsince خُلِقواthey were created
لا تُكذَبَنَّ فَإِنَّ الناسَ مُذ خُلِقوا
عَنout of رَغبَةٍdesire يُعظِمونَthey honor الناسَpeople أَوor فَرقِfear
عَن رَغبَةٍ يُعظِمونَ الناسَ أَو فَرقِ
Do not be deceived: for people, ever since they were created,
Have honored others out of desire or fear.
أَمّاas for الفَعالَdeeds فَفَوقَthen above النَجمِthe stars مَطلَعُهُtheir rising-place
أَمّا الفَعالَ فَفَوقَ النَجمِ مَطلَعُهُ
وَالقَولُand words يوجَدُare found مَطروحاًstrewn عَلىon الطُرُقِthe roads
وَالقَولُ يوجَدُ مَطروحاً عَلى الطُرُقِ
As for deeds, their rising-place is above the stars,
While words are found strewn along the roads.
