Behold, my Lord is mighty and glorious,

gracious, majestic, self-sufficient, worthy of praise.

    فَإِنَّ المُلوكَ لِرَبّي عَبيدُ

    I have seen kings, however great they grow;

for kings are indeed servants of my Lord.

You vie to amass this worldly chaff,

and all passes away, and all perishes.

And how many a mighty host has perished,

and an impregnable fortress, and a lofty palace!

And against calamities there endures no

mighty pillar for any created thing.

And what impregnable thing escapes destruction,

when even smooth rock and iron perish?

Behold, a judgment that urges a servant to

turn back to God is sound judgment.

So do not seek abundance in the abode of decay,

for there you are alone, utterly solitary.

    فَتِلكَ الَّتي كُنتَ مِنها تَحيدُ

    I see death as a debt with a cause;

and that is what you used to shun.

    يَميدُ بِكَ السُكرُ فيمَن يَميدُ

    Awaken, for you are heedless;

intoxication makes you reel among the reeling.

As though you had not seen how things perish,

and how the sturdy youth dies,

and how the very old man dies,

and how the newborn infant dies.

And who trusts Time in its promise,

while Time has a threat in every promise?

I see you hoping, though gray hair has already

sent you its messenger with tidings of your death.

And you diminish with every breath,

yet you imagine that with each you grow.

And your Master's kindness, O His servant,

toward you, throughout time, is fresh and new.

You seek from God His kindness,

so He gives you more than you desire.

And whoever thanks God is not forgotten by Him,

nor does further bounty from Him cease to reach him.

And none is ungrateful for kindness but the wretched,

and none gives thanks to God but the blessed.
