كُلٌّeveryone إِلىto الرَحمَنِthe Most Merciful مُنقَلَبُهhis return
وَالخَلقُand creation ماthat which لاnot يَنقَضيcomes to an end عَجَبُهits wonder
Everyone's return is to the Most Merciful.
All return to the Merciful, His wonders never cease
And creation's wonder never comes to an end.
Glory to Him whose name is exalted, though close He is unseen
سُبحانَglory to مَنHim who جَلَّis majestic اِسمُهُHis name وَعَلاand is exalted
وَدَناand is near وَوارَتand concealed عَينَهُHis very being حُجُبُهHis veils
Glory to Him whose name is majestic, who is exalted,
For every soul departing and soul arriving
and near, and whose veils conceal His very being.
No fleeing his decree however far his flight
وَلَرُبَّand many a غادِيَةٍa morning visitation وَرائِحَةٍand an evening visitation
لَمdid not يُنجِsave مِنهاfrom it هارِباًa fugitive هَرَبُهhis flight
And many a morning or evening visitation—
For every soul of youthful pride wrapped up in himself
a fugitive's flight has failed to save him from it.
Deceived by love of life though wise his own conceit
وَلَرُبَّand many a ذيone possessing نَشَبٍwealth تَكَنَّفَهُenveloped him
حُبُّlove الحَياةِof life وَغَرَّهُand deceived him نَشَبُهhis wealth
And many a wealthy man was enveloped
Now empty-handed stripped of all he thought to own
by love of life, and deceived by his wealth.
Another takes the spoils once held by him alone
قَدindeed صارَbecame مِمّاof what كانَhe used to يَملِكُهُown it
صِفراًempty-handed وَصارَand became لِغَيرِهِfor someone other than him سَلَبُهhis spoils
He is left, of all he once possessed,
O lover of this world, endless your toil and pain
with nothing; his spoils now belong to another.
A home you built, branches spread, their roots remain
ياO صاحِبَcompanion of الدُنياthe world المُحِبَthe lover لَهاof it
أَنتَyou الَّذيthe one whose لاnot يَنقَضيcomes to an end تَعَبُهhis toil
O companion of the world, who loves it,
It fell on some as lightning strikes the lofty peaks
you are the one whose toil never ends.
While sparing those of lowly state, their safety seeks
أَصلَحتَyou set in order داراًa dwelling هَمُّهاits cares أَشِبٌّtangled
جَمُّabundant الفُروعِbranches كَثيرَةٌnumerous شَعَبُهits offshoots
You have set in order a dwelling whose cares are tangled,
If ants could fly, apocalypse would then be near
thick with branches, its offshoots many.
I milked fate's teat but all it gave was worthless whey
إِنَّindeed اِستَهانَتَهاits scorn بِمَنfor whomever صَرَعَتit struck down
لَبِقَدرِsurely proportionate to مَنthe one whom تَسموrise high بِهِwith him رُتَبُهhis ranks
Indeed, its scorn for whomever it strikes down
Shun the false riches of this world and its gold
matches the height to which his ranks raise him.
Lest blinded by its glitter you should lose your soul
وَإِنِand if اِستَوَتfully develop لِلنَملِfor ants أَجنِحَةٌwings
حَتّىso that يَطيرَit flies فَقَدthen indeed دَناhas drawn near عَطَبُهits destruction
And if the ant grows wings
True merit lies in piety and moral strength
to fly, its destruction has already drawn near.
Conviction, faith, and conscience - these define his worth
إِنّيindeed I حَلَبتُI milked الدَهرَtime أَشطُرَهُits udder-halves
فَرَأَيتُهُand I found it لَمdid not يَصفُbecome pure ليfor me حَلَبُهits milk
Indeed, I have milked time from every part of its udder,
Wisdom's adornment is the courtesy he shows
and found its milk was never pure for me.
Perfection of his merit is the grace he knows
فَتَوَقَّso beware of دَهرَكَyour time ماas much as اِستَطَعتَyou can وَلاand do not
تَغرُركَdeceive you فِضَّتُهُits silver وَلاnor ذَهَبُهits gold
So guard against your time as best you can; let neither
One origin alone though manifold our ways
its silver nor its gold deceive you.
Discretion guides your steps through life's perplexing maze
كَرَمُnobility الفَتىthe young man التَقوىpiety وَقُرَّتُهُand his delight

مَحضُpure اليَقينِcertainty وَدينُهُand his faith حَسَبُهhis honor
A young man's nobility is piety, and his delight
Look well before you act, foresee the consequence
is pure certainty; his faith is his honor.
Or blindly lead yourself into misfortune's dense
حِلمُforbearance الفَتىthe young man مِمّاamong what يُزَيِّنُهُadorns him

وَتَمامُand the completion حِليَةِthe adornment فَضلِهِhis virtue أَدَبُهhis good manners
A young man's forbearance is among the things that adorn him,
and his good manners complete the adornment of his virtue.

And the earth is good, and all the children
of Eve upon it share one lineage.
إيتِundertake الأُمورَthe matters وَأَنتَand you are تُبصِرُهاseeing them

Approach matters with a clear view of them;
do not undertake what you do not know the cause of.
