كُلُّ حَيٍّ مِن عَيشِهِ مَغرورُ
Every living being comes to death.
Every living being will come to death
Every living being is beguiled by its life.
Every living being is deceived by his life

رِ أَلا لا وَلَيسَ يَنجو الكَبيرُ
No young one survives the calamities of time—
Neither the small nor the great can escape the vicissitudes of fate
Indeed, no; nor does the old one escape.
Alas! No one is safe, not even the great

How can we hope for immortality or covet life,
How can we hope for immortality or desire life
when our forebears' homes are graves?
While the graves of our ancestors lie in ruins

تَسفي الريحُ تُربَها وَتَمورُ
Many a day passes straight over us,
Many are the days that pass by us
while the wind scatters their dust and swirls.
The wind sweeps away their dust and it disappears

Among them is the father, tender toward us,
Among them are caring parents
and the brother, sincere in love, faithful in kinship, and dear,
A sincere brother, a loyal friend

A cousin, a close neighbor

A friend, a visitor, a visited one

Oh, what a blunder and an error of judgment!
What a misstep, what an error of judgement
None of us is excused for our ignorance.
None of us in our ignorance can be excused

The world has led us to the watering place, but has not led us back;
The world has led us and created us
Indeed, this deed of hers is sheer deception.
Surely this is but an illusion on its part
