بِحِذاري لِلبَينِ مِن أَحبابي
The raven’s cry startled me, Yazīd,
The crow's cry alarmed me, O Yazid,
warning me to beware of parting from my loved ones.
in my fear of parting from my loved ones.

O my affliction! O the turmoil within my very entrails
Oh, my affliction, and oh, the trembling of my entrails
and my soul, all because of a croaking bird!
and my soul because of a loudly cawing bird!

Parting spoke plainly through the croaking, yet it did not
It spoke plainly of parting in its cawing, but did not
speak plainly to me, in its croaking, of any return.
speak to me in its cawing of a return.

Then my tears burst forth in anguish at

And I was denied sleep, until it was as though I

I said to my heart, when it folded away union with Suʿdā,
I said to my heart, when it folded away its bond with Su'da,
for love of her, whose avenues lay far beyond reach:
for its passion—she so far beyond reach—:

You are like one who flees the rain
You are like one who flees from the rain
for fear of wetness—straight to the waterspout.
for fear of dampness, to the gutter spout.
