It is as though ‘Attābah, in her beauty,
were a priest’s icon that has bewitched its priest.
ياO رَبِّmy Lord لَوeven if أَنسَيتَنيهاYou made me forget her بِماwith what
فيin جَنَّةَthe garden الفِردَوسِof Paradise لَمnot أَنسَهاI forget her
O my Lord, even if You made me forget her with what
is in the Garden of Paradise, I would not forget her.
إِنّيindeed I إِذاًthen مِثلُlike الَتيthe woman who لَمnot تَزَلcease
دائِبَةًtoiling tirelessly فيat طَحنِهاher grinding كُدسَهاher heap of grain
Then I would indeed be like the woman who never ceased
toiling to grind her heap of grain,
حَتىuntil إِذاwhen لَمnot يَبقَremain مِنهاof it سِوىexcept
حَفنَةِa handful بُرٍّof wheat قَتَلَتshe killed نَفسَهاherself
until, when nothing of it remained but
a handful of wheat, she killed herself.
