وَماand not كَرَّمَennobled المَرءَa person إِلّاexcept التُقىpiety
The hardest jihad is the jihad against passion.
The hardest struggle is the struggle against desire.
Nothing ennobles a person but piety.
And only piety ennobles a person.
وَأَخلاقُand the character ذيone possessing الفَضلِvirtue مَعروفَةٌknown
بِبَذلِby bestowing الجَميلِkindness وَكَفِّand withholding الأَذىharm
The virtues of a person of excellence are well known:
And a virtuous person's character is known
bestowing kindness and withholding harm.
by bestowing kindness and withholding harm.
وَكُلُّand all الفُكاهاتِamusements مَملولَةٌtiresome
وَطولُand the length of التَعاشُرِcompanionship فيهِin it القِلىaversion
All pleasantries become tiresome,
And all amusements grow tiresome.
and long familiarity breeds estrangement.
And in prolonged companionship lies aversion.
وَكُلُّand every طَريفٍnew thing لَهُit has لَذَّةٌdelight
وَكُلُّand every تَليدٍold possession سَريعُquick البِلىwearing out
Every novelty holds a delight,
And every new thing has its delight.
and every heirloom is swift to decay.
And every old possession soon wears out.
وَلاand no شَيءَthing إِلّاexcept لَهُit has آفَةٌa blight
وَلاand no شَيءَthing إِلّاexcept لَهُit has مُنتَهىan end
Nothing exists but has its bane,
And nothing is without its blight.
and nothing exists but has its end.
And nothing is without its end.
وَلَيسَand is not الغِنىwealth نَشَبٌproperty فيin يَدٍa hand
وَلَكِنand yet غِنىrichness النَفسِthe soul كُلُّall الغِنىwealth
Wealth is not possessions held in the hand;
And wealth is not property held in one's hand,
rather, richness of spirit is all true wealth.
but richness of soul is the whole of wealth.
وَإِنّاand indeed we لَفيsurely amid صُنُعٍhandiwork ظاهِرٍvisible
يَدُلُّpoints عَلىto صانِعٍa maker لاnot يُرىseen
Indeed, we dwell amid evident works
And indeed we are amid visible handiwork
that point to a Maker who is unseen.
that points to a Maker who is unseen.
