O son of al-ʿAlāʾ, and O son of the noble chief Mirdās!
Indeed, I have praised you among my friends and those who sit with me.
أُثنيI offer praise عَلَيكَupon you وَليand I have حالٌa condition تُكَذِّبُنيthat belies me
فيماin what أَقولُI say فَأَستَحيِيso I feel ashamed مِنَbefore الناسِpeople
I praise you, yet my condition belies me
in what I say, so I feel ashamed before people.
حَتّىuntil إِذاwhen قيلَit was asked ماwhat أَعطاكَhe has given you مِنof صَفَدٍa gift
طَأطَأتُI lowered مِنbecause of سوءِthe wretchedness of حالٍa state عِندَهاthen راسيmy head
Until, when I was asked, “What gift has he given you?”
I lowered my head then, because of my wretched state.
