أَلاLo! إِنَّindeed رَيبَvicissitudes الدَهرِof time يُدنيbrings near وَيُبعِدُand drives away
وَيُؤنِسُand brings comfort بِالأُلّافِthrough dear companions طَوراًfor a time وَيُفقِدُand bereaves
Lo, time's vicissitudes bring near and drive away,
And grant the comfort of companions for a time, then take them away.
أَصابَتstruck بِرَيبِthrough the vicissitudes الدَهرِof time مِنّيof mine يَديmy hand يَديmy hand
فَسَلَّمتُso I submitted لِلأَقدارِto fate's decrees وَاللَهَand God أَحمَدُI praise
Through time's vicissitudes, one hand of mine struck the other.
So I submitted to fate, and I praise God.
وَقُلتُand I said لِرَيبِto the vicissitudes الدَهرِof time إِنif هَلَكَتhas perished يَدٌa hand
فَقَدthen indeed بَقِيَتhas remained وَالحَمدُand praise لِلَّهِto God ليfor me يَدُa hand
And I said to time's vicissitudes: if one hand has perished,
A hand still remains to me—praise be to God.
إِذاif بَقِيَremains المَأمومُal-Ma'mum ليfor me فَالرَشيدُthen al-Rashid ليis mine
وَليand for me جَعفَرٌJa'far لَمhave not يُفقَداbeen lost (both) وَمُحَمَّدُand Muhammad
If al-Ma'mum remains to me, then al-Rashid is mine,
And I have Ja'far and Muhammad: neither has been lost.
