فَرَرتُI fled مِنَfrom الفَقرِpoverty الَّذيwhich هُوَit مُدرِكيbound to overtake me
إِلىto بُخلِstinginess مَحظورِbarred النَوالِbounty مَنوعِever withholding
I fled from poverty, which is bound to overtake me,
To the stinginess of one whose bounty is barred, ever withholding.
فَأَعقَبَنيso he left me with الحِرمانَdeprivation غِبَّin the wake of مَطامِعيmy eager hopes
كَذالِكَthus مَنwhoever يَلقاهُmeets him غَيرَnot قَنوعِcontented
So he left me with deprivation in the wake of my eager hopes;
Such is the lot of whoever meets him without contentment.
وَغَيرُand not بَديعٍsurprising مَنعُwithholding ذيone possessing البُخلِstinginess مَلَهُhis wealth
كَماjust as بَذلُgiving freely أَهلِpeople of الفَضلِvirtue غَيرُnot بَديعِsurprising
And it is no wonder that a miser withholds his wealth,
Just as it is no wonder that the virtuous give freely.
إِذاwhen أَنتَyou كَشَّفتَyou lay bare الرِجالَmen وَجَدتَهُمyou find them
لِأَغراضِهِمconcerning their aims مِنsome حافِظٍone who guards وَمُذيعِand one who divulges
When you lay men bare, you find them:
Some guarding their aims, and others making them known.
