ما أَغفَلَ الناسَ وَالخُطوبُ بِهِم

ما أَغفَلَ الناسَ وَالخُطوبُ بِهِم

في خَبَبٍ مَرَّةً وَفي عَنَقِ

في خَبَبٍ مَرَّةً وَفي عَنَقِ

How heedless people are, while calamities carry them along,

now at a trot, now at an easy pace!

وَفي فَناءِ المُلوكِ مُعتَبَرٌ

وَفي فَناءِ المُلوكِ مُعتَبَرٌ

كَفى بِهِ حُجَّةً عَلى السَوقِ

كَفى بِهِ حُجَّةً عَلى السَوقِ

And in the death of kings there is a lesson;

it is proof enough against the common folk.
