until you fall short in your deeds.

    yourself—may you have no father!

expect it, already descended upon you.

    assemblies, strutting in fine robes?

    And those with pulpits and

    thrones, councils, and servants?

And those with exploits in battle,

and those with stratagems and ruses?

Death's deep waters bore them down,

all of them among those brought low.

Nothing remained of them after they were gone

except a tale or a proverb.

time, for it has no burden to bear.

reverence for God is among the finest gifts.

And when a young man fears God

in what he seeks, he has attained perfection.
