    وَالمَرءُ ذو أَمَلٍ وَالناسُ أَشباهُ

    Time has its turns of fortune, and death its causes;

    And man has hope, and people are alike.

    يَجري بِها قَدَرٌ وَاللَهُ أَجراهُ

    Lessons have never ceased, with cause for reflection in them;

    Destiny runs its course through them, and God has set it running.

    وَاللَهُ أَضحَكَهُ وَاللَهُ أَبكاهُ

    One whose soul is governed weeps and laughs;

    And God made him laugh, and God made him weep.

    وَالناسُ حَيثُ يَكونُ المالُ وَالجاهُ

    And the afflicted man is left with no one at his side;

    And people are where wealth and prestige are.

    كُلٌّ فَمُستَعبَدٌ وَاللَهُ مَولاهُ

    And creatures are of my Lord's creation; He governs them;

    Each is thus in servitude, and God is his Master.

    قَد فازَ عَبدٌ مُنيبُ القَلبِ أَوّاهُ

    Blessed is the servant who turns repentantly to his Master;

    A servant repentant at heart, ever sighing in devotion, has indeed prospered.

    O seller of faith for this world and its vanities,

    You accept for your faith something that is not its equal.

    How long will you remain in diversion and play,

    While death hurtles toward you, its mouth agape?

    رُبَّ اِمرِئٍ حَتفُهُ فيما تَمَنّاهُ

    A man does not attain everything he wishes for;

    Many a man's death lies in what he wished for.

    لَعَلَّ حَتفَ اِمرِئٍ في الشَيءِ يَهواهُ

    Wishes are surely delusion, error, and caprice;

    Perhaps a man's death lies in the thing he loves.

    إِنَّ الشَقِيَّ لَمَن غَرَّتهُ دُنياهُ

    Through ignorance you are beguiled by the world and its glitter;

    Truly, the wretched man is the one his world has deceived.

    It is as though a living man, long safe and sound,

    Has already entered death's agonies, which engulf him.

    وَلِلحَوادِثِ تَحريكٌ وَإِنباهُ

    And people slumber, unaware of what is intended for them;

    But calamities stir and awaken.

    لا تَرضَ لِلناسِ شَيئاً لَستَ تَرضاهُ

    Be fair—may you be guided—when claiming your due;

    Do not accept for others anything you would not accept for yourself.

    Ah, many a day's glad tidings came approaching,

    Then its glad tidings turned to a voice announcing death.

    أَحسِن فَعاقِبَةُ الإِحسانِ حُسناهُ

    Never scorn the smallest act of kindness;

    Do good, for goodness has the fairest outcome.

    وَخَيرُ أَمرِكَ ما أَحمَدتَ عُقباهُ

    And every affair must have an outcome;

    And the best of your affairs is that whose outcome you find praiseworthy.

    مَن لَم يُصَبِّحهُ وَجهُ المَوتِ مَسّاهُ

    You amuse yourself, while death owns our evening and morning;

    Whom death's face does not visit in the morning, it visits in the evening.

    وَخَيرُ زادِ الفَتى لِلمَوتِ تَقواهُ

    Many a youth's journey to death has already drawn near;

    And a youth's best provision for death is his piety.

    How near death is in this world, and how dreadful it is!

    And how bitter this world's fruit is, and how sweet!

    How often has a man vied for something and schemed over

    it against others, then gone away from it and left it behind!

    While one who cares for a companion rejoices in him,

    Suddenly, one day, he finds himself closing his companion's eyes and covering him.

    He weeps over him briefly, then carries him out,

    So he gives the earth possession of him, then forgets him.

    وَكُلُّ ذي عَمَلٍ يَوماً سَيَلقاهُ

    And everyone with an appointed term will one day reach it;

    And everyone who has done a deed will one day meet it.
