أَمّاas for بُيوتُكَyour houses فيin الدُنياthis world فَواسِعَةٌso they are spacious
فَلَيتَso, would that قَبرَكَyour grave بَعدَafter المَوتِdeath يَتَّسِعُbe spacious
As for your houses in this world, they are spacious;
Would that your grave were spacious after death!
وَلَيتَand would that ماwhat جَمَعَتgathered كَفّاكَyour two hands مِنof نَشبٍwealth
يُنجيكَsave you مِنfrom هَولِthe terror of ماwhat إِنindeed (emphatic) أَنتَyou مُطَّلِعُwill behold
And would that the wealth your two hands have gathered
Could save you from the terror of what you will behold.
أَيَفرَحُdo ... rejoice? الناسُpeople بِالدُنياin this world وَقَدthough indeed عَلِمواthey know
أَنَّthat المَنازِلَthe dwellings فيamid لَذّاتِناour pleasures قَلَعُimpermanent
Do people rejoice in this world, though they know
That the dwellings amid our pleasures are impermanent?
مَنwhoever كانَis مُغتَبِطاًcontented فيهاin it بِمَنزِلَةٍwith a station
فَإِنَّهُthen indeed he لِسِواهاto a place other than it سَوفَwill يَنتَجِعُseek fresh pasture
Whoever is content with a station in it
Will surely seek fresh pasture elsewhere.
وَكُلُّand every ناصِرِchampion of دُنياthis world سَوفَwill تَخذُلُهُit forsakes him
وَكُلُّand every حَبلٍcord عَلَيهاupon it سَوفَwill يَنقَطِعُbreak
And every champion of this world will be forsaken by it,
And every cord tied to it will break.
ماwhat ليis with me أَرىI see الناسَpeople لاnot تَسلواsubside ضَغاأُنَهُمtheir grudges
وَلاnor قُلوبُهُمُtheir hearts فيfor the sake of اللَهِGod تَجتَمِعُunite
Why do I see that people's grudges never subside,
And their hearts never unite for God's sake?
إِذاwhen رَأَيتَyou see لَهُمof theirs جَمعاًa gathering تُسَرُّyou are delighted بِهِby it
فَإِنَّهُمyet indeed they حينَwhen تَبلوyou examine شَأنَهُمtheir affairs شِيَعُfactions
When you see a gathering of theirs that delights you,
Yet when you examine their affairs, they are factions.
ياO جامِعَgatherer of المالِwealth فيin الدُنياthis world لِوارِثِهِfor its inheritor
هَلwill ...? أَنتَyou بِالمالِfrom wealth بَعدَafter المَوتِdeath تَنتَفِعُbenefit
O gatherer of wealth in this world for its inheritor,
Will you benefit from wealth after death?
لاdo not تُمسِكِhoard المالَwealth وَاِستَرضِand seek the favor of الإِلَهَGod بِهِwith it
فَإِنَّfor indeed حَسبَكَenough for you مِنهُfrom it الرَيُّthirst quenched وَالشَبَعُand hunger satisfied
Do not hoard wealth, but seek God's favor with it,
For all you need from it is to quench your thirst and satisfy your hunger.
