Ah, O heart whose attachments are many,
have you not seen this age, whose calamities run their course?
تُسابِقُyou race رَيبَvicissitudes of الدَهرِtime فيin طَلَبِpursuit of الغِنىwealth
بِأَيِّwith what جَناحٍwing خِلتَyou imagined أَنَّكَthat you سابِقُهwould outstrip it
You race against time's vicissitudes in pursuit of wealth;
with what wing did you think you could outstrip it?
رُوَيدَكَslow down لاتَنسَdo not forget المَقابِرَthe graves وَالبِلىand decay

Slow down; do not forget the graves and decay,
and the taste of death's draughts, which you will taste.
وَماand ... not المَوتُdeath إِلّاexcept ساعَةٌan hour غَيرَexcept أَنَّهاthat it

Death is but an hour, yet
day and night you keep pace with it amid mortal perils.

And what desire or diversion have you attained
securely, without being destined to part from it?
إِذاif اعتَصَمَseeks refuge المَخلوقُthe created being مِنfrom فِتَنِtemptations of الهَوىdesire

If a created being seeks refuge from the temptations of desire
in his Creator, his Creator saves him from them.

And for anyone to whom this world is of little worth, I
guarantee that his character will not be censured.

I see the world's companion persisting, in his ignorance,
in trusting a companion who does not agree with him.
أَلاbehold رُبَّmany a ذيwearer of طِمرَينِtwo tattered garments فيin مَجلِسٍa gathering غَداtomorrow

Behold, many a wearer of two rags will tomorrow be in a gathering,
its carpets and cushions spread out,

a companion and neighbor to the Prophet Muhammad.
A companion who keeps his company has indeed gained great nearness.
وَرُبَّand many a مَحَلٍّabode قَدindeed صَدَقتَyou have been sincere حَلَلتَهُyou shall inhabit it
إِذاif عَلِمَknows الرَحمَنُthe All-Merciful أَنَّكَthat you صادِقُهare true to Him
And many an abode you shall inhabit, having been sincere,
if the All-Merciful knows that you are true to Him.
