People must submit, do good, and be content;
For circumstances never grew strait without then easing.
وَكَمand how many مِنof مُنىًwishes لِلنَفسِfor the soul قَدindeed ظَفِرَتit gained possession بِهاof them

And how many wishes the soul has attained,
Then yearned for what lay beyond them and aspired to it.

فَماfor ... not مُوِّتَwere made to die الأَحياءُthe living إِلّاexcept لِيُبعَثواso that they may be resurrected
وَإِلّاand only لِتُجزىso that ... may be recompensed كُلُّevery نَفسٍsoul بِماfor what سَعَتit strove for
For the living are made to die only to be raised again,
And only so that every soul may be recompensed for its striving.
