Have the dwellers of the graves any news?

Far from it! Not a soul, nor a trace.

How utterly death cuts off a friend, and how

close this world's serenity is to trouble!

I reflected on what we strive for, and behold,

we are all at risk concerning it.

And if I reflect, take heed, and

perceive, I am indeed in an abode of lessons.

O man of conceit, since you were drawn close by the

sultan—this comes of too little reflection.

Why do you not return the greeting to the

visitors, except with a fleeting glance?

    فَكَيفَ لَو كُنتَ مِن سِوى البَشَرِ

    You do this, though you are a human being;

how then, if you were other than human?

You are nothing but dust, even if

you now hold authority and high rank.

Sovereignty belongs to God; He has no partner.

Decrees proceed from Him in due measure.

How able God is to change the state

you are now in—so be on your guard!

And know that the days toy with

man, and that time is full of reversals.
