What have my reproachers to do with my wealth?

    They urged me toward error.

    They reproached me for forgiving

Ibn Maʿn, and for my forbearance.

If he did what he did,

it was because of my wrongdoing and my deeds.

Compared with him, I had the less responsive

    firestick, in every circumstance.

    All that came from him

was due to an ugly trait of mine.

It was only my right hand

    that ignorantly severed my left.

What he owns—nay, his very self—is mine,

and his are my self and my wealth.

Tell whoever marvels at the beauty

of my return and my change of heart:

    We have often seen this

    happening among men:

    many a reunion after rejection,

    and hatred after union.
